Second Working Seminar of the AI4Software Research Network

On January 16th and 17th, we were fortunate to attend the Second Working Seminar of the AI4Software Research Network, organized by our colleagues at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC), Gregorio Robles and Jesús Gonzalez Barahona.

The seminar was primarily structured around two highly engaging roundtables and a “lightning talk” session to showcase the latest work from each node, ranging from evolutionary algorithms underpinning AutoML proposals to LLM-based agents for requirements engineering. The network’s maturity was evident in the volume and quality of the presented work.

In our case, Chema delivered the “lightning talk” for the University of Extremadura node, presenting, first, our systematic evaluation framework for multi-agent systems based on LLMs for software development and, second, our proposal to organize an AI4Software Summer School in Cáceres, with more details to follow soon.

Additionally, Roberto had the privilege of participating in the roundtable “Where is AI4SE research heading? Expert reflections on trends, emerging areas, and outdated approaches in AI advancements for Software Engineering”. This discussion covered highly relevant topics, such as the application of LLMs in various software development tasks and the need for the network to explore ways to incorporate LLMs (and agents) into undergraduate Software Engineering programs.

To conclude, a demo session was held where, among other projects, the URJC demo on code visualization in augmented reality caught our attention, using, for instance, the city metaphor as in CodeCity. Below, you can see a small web app that allows you to visualize a researcher’s publications with this metaphor using her ORCID. The example uses Tim Berners-Lee’s ORCID.

These were intense but highly rewarding days of work. We return re-energized to continue our research efforts in this field.

On November 30, 2022, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT. Like most of us, we were surprised 🤯 with its incredible capabilities. From the first moment, we wondered what impact it would have on the different facets of our day-to-day life: in Computer Engineering, research, and teaching. Based on an idea from our colleague Roberto, we decided to focus on the latter.

The result of several months of effort is our work “Impact of ChatGPT in the evaluation methods of a Computer Engineering degree “, which we presented to the JENUI of 2023 and for which we have been awarded the prize for best paper of the conference. In this edition, dominated by ChatGPT (something that has kept some speakers awake at night), the paper “To rival or not: analysis of Wooclap’s competition mode based on performance and audio processing “, by our colleagues from the University of Murcia, was also awarded.

Generative Artificial Intelligence has undergone an essential evolution during the last years and especially in 2022. One of the intelligence that has caused the most buzz in academia is ChatGPT, which provides an interface that significantly simplifies the productive use of a large language model. These language models can parse and generate text with great speed and quality. These capabilities could have a relevant impact on teaching-learning methodologies and assessment methods. In order to analyze the possible impact of ChatGPT on assessment methods, in this work, ChatGPT’s ability to solve the exams of 15 Software Engineering subjects of a Computer Engineering degree has been tested. The results show that ChatGPT could noticeably impact the assessment methods; it can overcome many questions and problems of different natures in multiple subjects. As a fundamental contribution, a detailed study of the results by type of questions and problems is provided, which allows us to establish recommendations to be taken into account in the design of assessment methods.

MusicGenia’s main goal consists in building a cloud-based platform to offer AI-generated production music as a service for content creators and media, which can be consumed online (live music generation) or offline (recorded music generation). The direct benefits of that platform are: (1) music free of royalties; (2) original music; (3) easy to find music suiting your content; and (4) music on stream (consume as much as you need, pay per seconds not per song).

Roberto Rodríguez Echeverría and José María Conejero Manzano have organized an invited talk by UEx graduate student Mario Corchero for current students. Mario is currently working at Bloomberg, and in his talk, he wants to show our students how the subjects he took in the degree have been helpful to solve real problems and challenges he has encountered in his work at Bloomberg. Javier Zugasti will join him to tell you about Bloomberg’s job opportunities.

The talk will take place on Tuesday, November 29, at 17:30h in the Assembly Hall of the Polytechnic School.

Although initially geared towards 3rd and 4th-year students, it is suitable for any student, regardless of year.

Mario Corchero is a Senior Software Developer at Bloomberg. He leads the Python infrastructure team, enabling the company to work effectively in Python, building company-wide libraries and tools. His professional experience resides mainly in Python and C++, and he has contributed some patches to multiple Python open source projects.

Javier Zugasti holds a degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. After two years working in Germany in the automotive industry, Javier has worked at Bloomberg Engineering for 12 years as a software developer and managing engineering teams producing financial applications for the Bloomberg Terminal. In the last 3 of those years, managing the News Production Engineering department that supports almost 4000 journalists worldwide responsible for creating Bloomberg News content.

On Thursday, November 24, 2022, within the technological showroom Foro Conecta Empresas, Metrikamedia, a spin-off of the UEx, presents one of the technologies developed in its company. It is used to separate voice and music within radio broadcasts to facilitate their auditing by advertisers and monitoring companies. Visitors can try to identify a piece of music being played in the background while an announcer is speaking, demonstrating the usefulness of this platform.

Deep Learning Music Generation

On November 3 and 4, as part of the Ph.D. Program in Computer Science at the University of Almeria, Roberto Rodríguez Echeverría, University of Extremadura, taught the course Generation of content and/or recognizable patterns using neural networks, with the participation of Jorge Periánez Pascual, MetrikaMedia.

For some time now, relying on artificial intelligence to help us in our daily work has ceased to be a dream and has become a reality. Every day we use machine learning models to suggest the next words we will type on our cell phones, to give just one example. What we would never have imagined is that this artificial intelligence would help us to create creative content such as code for our programs, images following textual descriptions, or, as we explained in this seminar, music", commented UEx professor Roberto Rodríguez Echeverría.
